Goodness in People ...Story of Cupid and Psyche
Ever heard of Cupid and Psyche...
Most of you might be familiar with Cupid his other name is Eros or Amor (as called in some places), The God of Affection, love, and desires but do you know about Psyche? Well, Psyche (Pronounced as Cy-key) was the Goddess of soul and also the wife of Cupid. How do we see goodness in people? Let me give you an insight into their story...
Cupid and Psyche
Beauty is a curse, Psyche thought as she looked over the cliff where she was abandoned by her father. Psyche was a very beautiful girl. She was so pretty that people used to compare her with Venus. Venus was the goddess Of beauty and love. Some threw flowers in Psyche's path and worshipped her as if she were a goddess. She was angry for being compared With a mortal. Venus called her son Cupid and gave him a potion to give Psyche."This will make her fall in love with a terrible monster. "That night Cupid brought a cup of sorrow and love to the palace where Psyche slept. As he washed her face with the potion, he saw her brow wrinkle With pain. "l cannot destroy anyone this beautiful" he said. In his haste to wash away sorrow, Cupid's arrows of love tumbled out of its quiver and pierced out his foot. In that instant, he falls in love with Psyche. When she awoke she couldn't see Cupid, and that's when he said to her "My mother must not know about my love for you" and he flew away silently without letting her know that he was the immortal god who had fallen in love with a mortal. When her father asked for guidance from the oracle of Apollo(The god of light, prophesy) he told him to abandon his daughter on a rocky crag where she would marry a cruel like winged evil. Alone on the cliff, Psyche felt the wind passing through gently lifting her into the air and placing her down in front of a palace "You are home" said an unseen voice. "Your husband awaits you in the room If you dare to meet him". Psyche was brave enough, she told herself. The room was so dark she couldn't see her husband but he didn't feel serpent at all. She asked him who he was but he told he could never answer this question If she loved him she would not need to know this. He visited her continually. Unfamiliar with her husband's identity, Psyche still loved him even more than herself .....And finally, after a month or two, there came a day when she was expecting a baby.
I would say Psyche didn't love Cupid because he was the god of love. After all, the first impression she had of Cupid was a Calm voice with no face... Psyche loved Cupid's soul, Who he was, and his values. Later on, as the story continues Psyche finds out who her husband was. If you don't know much about greek mythology their daughter was the god of pleasure - Hedone... Can you imagine befriending a person without even knowing how they look like and who they are? This may sound a bit weird.
We judge people by the way they look. Even if you deny this fact, this is the truth. You unintentionally start talking to a person who looks kind. But there's a saying that cruel people look kind and kind people don't look kind (I don't believe in such though) What an irony! Most of you might have different opinions on this thought. No matter how much the world changes but most people don't tend to change. From the above story, I wanted to refer to how we can love even without knowing one's identity because it isn't an identity that would fulfill our love it's their heart and pure soul which would... Just take the example of this century's social media, you like a person's profile page because of the pretty picture they have as their display picture, you chat and talk for a long time and then there comes a time when you start thinking that yes they are the one for me and then you decide to meet up the person in reality. When in the end you meet up and you see that they look completely different from their profile picture you ditch them, forgetting that they were the ones whom you were wishing to be with the most last hour, And you deny them just because they didn't fill up your eye's expectations... This fact is well described in the Netflix series 'Love hard' something similar happens there too...
"Oh, he is soo fat must be eating nonstop".
"She is soo dark must be a low caste person."
" Thin girls are pretty. Guys who exercise in the gym everyday look good "
A society describes Beautiful girls are those with fair skin tone, long black hair, thin body. When normal fellows see those girls with just the perfect features, we pity ourselves. In African beauty, a beautiful girl has defined as perfect brown skin with curly hair and a fairly healthy figure, whereas in American or any other continental beauty is defined differently... Then how do we differentiate between beauty standards? If an African woman moves to an American country how will her beauty be defined?
Nowadays many people change themselves a lot for so-called-"Fitting in society". Nowadays, I bet literally every 7of 10 teens might feel insecure about themselves whenever they look in the mirror. No sharp jawline, unseen collarbones, thin waist is what we all crave .. Believe it or not, but I feel that we unknowingly want to be around a person who looks good to our eyes... Fills up the "Trendy cool space". And if you deny this fact and say "no, the world has changed and we don't believe in lookism then turn the pages back to George Floyd's case, You won't find any example better than him, Remember what cruel happened to him, just the reason was how he looked... King of pop- Michael Jackson, he too realized that this cruelty would emerge and become a barrier in the way of his success, so he kept changing his skin tone surgeries after surgeries ( Not criticizing him, but describing the fact)... From Michael Jackson to George Floyd nothing has changed the topic remains the same and so does the mentality. In fact in every brown household always in marriage proposals, the family meets up just to see whether the girl doesn't have a dark skin tone, is she severely overweight, does she have any body defect or is she too short.. Who cares about knowledge and a pure heart...All these facts are limited just to quotations, right? We are always attracted to those colorful petals of the garden but no one sees that even leaves of different trees are contrasting...
Next time you see someone for the second time, try to recognize them by their fair and smooth words and not by their skin tone because it will introduce them in a totally new way and you will respect their beauty ...

Great job! That was a really good link up from the Psyche's Greek myth, to our modern day society. Beauty standards are never permanent, and change from place to place...just like the everyday technological trends. Beauty does lie in the eye of the beholder, doesn't it...?
